What changes when the frame and glass disappear?

A conventional rigid module uses a structural frame and protective glazing. Semi-flexible products replace some of that construction with thin laminates and supporting layers. The resulting weight and profile can suit a pop-top, a gently curved roof or an installation where extra height is awkward. Different flexible products use different materials, so compare their actual specifications.

The saving can be substantial in the right layout. A thin panel may follow a permitted curve rather than require a raised frame. Even a flexible panel needs careful handling: folding, repeated rolling and wind movement can damage its cells. Even a light product can contain brittle solar cells and delicate interconnections.

Rigid panels bring their own compromises. They need a mounting arrangement, add height and mass, and may occupy a roof rectangle that conflicts with skylights. Start with the roof's practical constraints, then compare the models that will fit.

The £85 full-size 470W panel works out at roughly 18p/W; the £85 semi-flexible 100W example is 85p/W. Those prices purchase different weights and footprints. Roof fit and a suitable mounting arrangement come first.

Include delivery and the complete fixing arrangement. Bimble quotes delivery guides excluding VAT, with one panel under 25kg from £36 plus VAT in mainland GB. The checkout postcode and basket determine the charge. Add VAT to the delivery guide figure and check the final basket total. [5]

Simon’s experience, and its limits

His experience prompted a closer look at construction, fitting and replacement. Other owners' results will depend on the panel and its installation.

The mounting manual is part of the product

Ask for the exact model's current installation manual before ordering. Find its permitted curvature, support requirements, fixing method and adhesive compatibility. Check how cables and the junction box will be protected and how a replacement could be removed. A permanent bond can make later removal difficult without damage.

As one specific example, Photonic Universe's EFLX manual describes bending once during permanent installation onto a supported surface, rather than repeated flexing. It also warns that sealed pockets of air underneath can expand with heat and damage cells. For the FLAX model in the price table, ask for its own fitting instructions. [8]

SunPower's linked flexible-panel manual discusses ventilation underneath and secure support that prevents wind flapping. The retailer places additional restrictions on the 100W model above: it must not be walked on or connected into series or parallel arrays. Confirm any intended multi-panel arrangement with the supplier instead of assuming familiar connectors make it acceptable. [7] [3]

Heat affects both types

Silicon panel output depends on cell temperature as well as sunlight. The official Victron rigid-panel sheet gives a maximum-power temperature coefficient of −0.45%/°C for the 95W example, so its output falls as cells become hotter than the test temperature, with other conditions held equal. [6]

A low-profile bonded installation can have different cooling conditions from a raised module. The right mounting approach depends on the panel's construction. Supporting the panel, avoiding damaging trapped pockets and allowing appropriate ventilation are related but distinct requirements. Follow the chosen product's instructions for support and cooling.

Keep the roof layout in mind too. Shade from a vent, dirt or an aerial can affect output irrespective of whether a panel is flexible or rigid. An unobstructed smaller arrangement may perform more usefully than a larger nominal rating in a poor position.

A warranty is not a lifespan measurement

Read product cover and performance cover separately. Product cover concerns specified defects in materials or workmanship. A performance promise concerns retained output under its stated conditions. Read what each warranty covers, including installation conditions and how replacements are handled.

For example, Victron lists five years of product cover alongside separate retained-output terms for its rigid range. Flexible products also vary: Photonic Universe has also announced a different semi-flexible range with five-year vehicle/boat cover and longer roof cover. Check the exact current model and usage terms. [6] [9]

Installation exclusions, claim handling and who supplies support matter alongside the headline duration. Compare the exact product's cover alongside its construction and the supplier's support.

Build a practical shortlist

  • Choose rigid first when: roof space, payload and an approved fixing approach suit it, and panel-only value matters most.
  • Investigate flexible when: weight, permitted curvature or low height solves a specific constraint, and you can meet the product's fitting requirements.
  • Pause either choice when: roof limits, safe attachment, controller compatibility or replacement access remain unclear.

For a pop-top, include panel and mounting mass in the roof maker's limits and confirm how the roof operates with it fitted. For a moving vehicle, confirm suitability for road loads and the proposed mounting method with the relevant suppliers.

Finally, compare usable roof layouts and the complete system cost. Choose the equipment on evidence, then use actual charging data and sunlight forecasts to understand what that installation delivers in the places you travel.
