Start with four questions

Where does charging energy come from: solar, the vehicle, or mains? What battery stores it? Which appliances need DC or 230V AC? What do you want to measure or control? Those answers identify the product roles before you encounter model numbers.

Solar controllers and mains chargers draw from different supplies. Shunts measure current, BMSs protect cells, and Cerbo hubs gather system information. One enclosure can combine several functions, but it still has limits for each. This map follows manufacturer information checked on 15 October 2026 and will help you choose the functions your system needs.

BlueSolar and SmartSolar: charging from panels

Both names include solar controllers, so identify the exact MPPT or PWM model. In the MPPT families covered in our controller guide, a name such as 100/30 means a maximum 100V PV voltage and 30A battery charging current. Panel wattage is listed separately. Supported battery voltages and PV short-circuit limits need their own checks. [1]

SmartSolar provides built-in Bluetooth. Eligible BlueSolar VE.Direct devices can use an external Bluetooth Smart dongle for VictronConnect access. That can be useful for an existing unit, but compare the combined price and port use before buying new. Check networking features separately, as they depend on the controller and interface. [2]

Blue Smart IP22, IP65 and IP67: charging from mains

These are AC battery chargers. The IP designation describes the enclosure's protection against solid objects and water. The exact voltage, current and mains-plug version remain separate choices.

Blue Smart charger families and their main differences
FamilyUseful distinctionCheck before buying
IP22Installed format, configurable charging and BluetoothDry location; fan use depends on model. Multiple outputs share the charger's total rated current. [3]
IP65Portable format, no fan, interchangeable clamps/ringsCurrent, UK plug and temperature derating. [4]
IP67Sealed charger family with built-in BluetoothExact connections, output and installation conditions, including the mains connection. [5]

On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to compare every column.

Current compatible IP22 hardware can join VE.Smart networking; IP65 and IP67 are not listed as compatible. Shared sensing and charging synchronisation depend on the model's VE.Smart support. [6]

Orion: distinguish a converter from a battery charger

Orion covers DC conversion and battery charging. For battery charging, choose a model with the required charging profile. Read the full product name and manual, including input/output voltages and whether isolation is required.

Orion-Tr Smart chargers provide configurable alternator charging. The older 12/12-30 non-isolated model has no VE.Direct port, and its VictronConnect display does not show input or output current. [7] Orion XS is a different platform: the 12/12-50A adds adjustable input/output current limits, VE.Direct and GX integration. It remains an alternator/DC charger, without a solar MPPT input. Check the specification for the exact XS voltage and current version. [8]

SmartShunt and BMV: measuring the battery

A battery monitor measures current and uses configured battery information to estimate state of charge. SmartShunt puts the measurement electronics at the shunt and uses an app or compatible connected display/system. Accurate estimates depend on correct setup and routing the relevant battery current through the shunt. [9]

BMV offers a dedicated display as well as its shunt-based monitoring. BMV-712 Smart includes Bluetooth, while older BMV variants can require an accessory for phone access. Choose around whether you want an always-visible panel or prefer a phone. Charging and cell protection are separate jobs for a charger and suitable BMS. [10]

Phoenix, MultiPlus, Quattro and EasySolar

Phoenix is associated with inverter products, including the range now called Inverter VE.Direct. An inverter takes battery DC and supplies AC appliances. The VE.Direct version can use a Bluetooth accessory. Check the exact Phoenix model's interfaces; mains battery charging is a separate function. [11]

MultiPlus combines inverter, mains charging and transfer functions, with one AC input. Quattro accommodates two AC inputs, useful where shore/grid and generator sources both need management. Exact versions differ. Choose the correct battery voltage and UK AC version, then compare continuous watts, VA, surge capability and temperature ratings. [12]

EasySolar combines further functions. Specifically, EasySolar-II GX integrates an MPPT, inverter/charger and control hub. That can reduce separate boxes, but also ties your choice to its combined capacities and installation needs. It brings solar charging and AC supply together in one package. [13]

Cerbo, GX, VictronConnect and VRM

Cerbo GX is a communications and system-coordination hub. It gathers data from supported devices and can support remote monitoring through VRM with suitable internet connectivity. Check the exact Cerbo version, supported interfaces and device compatibility before buying. GX variants of other products may include that hub function. [14]

VictronConnect covers compatible device configuration, firmware and monitoring, often over Bluetooth. Since version 6.30, it also includes VRM dashboards directly. Local device access uses Bluetooth or a compatible wired interface. Remote VRM access needs an internet-connected installation with suitable monitoring hardware. Remote device settings also have product-specific limits. [15] [16]

Choose each component for a reason

A mixed-brand battery, controller and charger can make sense when voltages, profiles, total current and BMS controls agree. The trade-off may be separate apps or less coordinated control. An integrated system can simplify monitoring, but only where the exact products support the functions you need.

Compare the delivered and installed cost of the functions you need. Published specifications and current prices give you a useful basis for that decision. Start with loads and travel patterns, then add each box for a clear reason. Solar Outlook helps with solar expectations and supported device information; use the manufacturer's tools and qualified system advice for equipment configuration and final design.
