Start with the question you want answered
Is the panel working now? Did the battery charge overnight? Can you leave the fridge running until tomorrow? Each question needs different evidence. A live watt reading answers the first only for that moment. A battery percentage depends on the monitor behind it. A forecast helps you plan tomorrow's use alongside the harvest you have already recorded.
List what is measured, where it is stored, how often it updates and whether you must be nearby. A screen that looks complete can still have gaps. The most useful monitoring setup makes its sources, timestamps and estimates easy to identify.
VictronConnect: monitoring and equipment management
VictronConnect is Victron's app for supported product monitoring, configuration and firmware updates. Local access can use Bluetooth or an appropriate wired interface, depending on the product. Check the model's connection options, including whether Bluetooth is built in or needs an accessory. [1]
Some eligible VE.Direct equipment without built-in Bluetooth can use the VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, including supported BlueSolar controllers and Phoenix VE.Direct inverters. The dongle adds the local Bluetooth connection. [2]
Since version 6.30, the VRM system dashboard can be viewed inside VictronConnect. To use the remote dashboard, the installation still needs compatible monitoring hardware and internet access. [1]
GX and VRM: a route to the installation while you are away
A GX communication centre, such as Cerbo GX, gathers information from supported connected equipment and provides a system view. It acts as the system's communications and control hub. Device interfaces and supported integrations still need checking. [3]
VictronConnect-Remote uses a GX device and VRM account, with an active internet connection at the installation. Both your phone and the installation need an internet connection for remote access. Budget for the connection as well as the hub if unattended remote access matters. [4]
Monitoring and configuration rights differ by interface. For example, VictronConnect-Remote displays VE.Bus product overview and detail pages, but their settings use the separate Remote VEConfigure route. Avoid buying a system on the assumption that every setting shown locally can be changed through the same remote screen. [4]
VE.Smart Networking has a different job
VE.Smart Networking exchanges sensing data between compatible Victron products over Bluetooth. Depending on the equipment, that includes battery voltage, temperature or current and synchronised charging. Smart Battery Sense does not measure current, and Orion XS does not support synchronised charging through this network. [5]
The shared information helps compatible chargers adjust their behaviour. Internet access and recorded cloud history need a separate connection and logging setup. Ask separately how records will be collected and how you will see them from outside Bluetooth range. Similar-sounding features are easy to confuse when shopping across several product families.
Battery app, shunt monitor or charger reading?
A battery's BMS app can expose cell temperatures, protection status and other battery-specific data. Fogstar, for example, documents Bluetooth monitoring through its Drift app. What is available depends on that battery and BMS version. Check the exact battery and protocol supported by the app. [6]
A shunt monitor measures current crossing its measurement point and calculates state of charge using configured battery parameters and synchronisation. Correct installation and setup matter: current that bypasses it is missing from its account. The percentage is an estimate whose accuracy depends on that setup. [7]
SmartShunt offers local VictronConnect access, with a communication centre providing an optional route to VRM. It handles monitoring, with charging and battery protection supplied by other equipment. [8]
Check the measurement boundary. One battery's BMS in a parallel bank reports that battery, while a charger reports its own output. A whole-system view depends on measuring all the relevant sources, batteries and loads.
Where Solar Outlook fits
Solar Outlook combines terrain-aware daylight and weather-based solar potential with local readings and history from supported devices. Forecast exploration works without a charger. Its equipment integrations read data. Use the manufacturer's tools for charger settings and firmware updates.
As checked against the project's implementation notes on 15 October 2026, physical connected-device verification covers the SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 and Phoenix 12/1200 through a VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle. Other connected models and firmware require verification.
The broader Victron Instant Readout decoder is tested using recorded sample broadcasts. That is distinct from testing each product on physical hardware. Broadcasts supply live values; retrieving stored device history uses a separate connected interface. Experimental Bluetooth battery profiles include JBD/Fogstar with JBD and certain original unencrypted LiTime-family protocols; physical lithium-battery verification is still outstanding. Encrypted variants and other protocols need their own integration and testing.
Phone platform, model and firmware matter. Check current model and firmware compatibility before buying equipment specifically for Solar Outlook. Availability also depends on the app version you are using.
Read the source and timestamp before the number
Useful labels distinguish instantaneous watts, energy collected today, stored device history and readings recorded by your phone. Look for gaps and timestamps: a missing interval means the reading is unavailable, and the last received value should keep its original time.
Also distinguish potential from harvest. A full battery or charging limit can reduce measured solar collection even when sunshine is available. Nearby trees and roof obstructions can add shade beyond the weather model's view. For diagnosis, compare similar time windows and consider battery demand before concluding that a panel is failing.
Keep a small baseline record of a typical day. That helps you notice changes and gives an installer more useful evidence than a single unexplained screenshot.
A short monitoring buying checklist
- Which device measures each number, and does it cover the whole bank?
- Does the exact model support the required Bluetooth or wired interface?
- Are records stored on the equipment, phone or online service?
- What works with no internet, with the phone away or with the app closed?
- Does a feature read data, change settings or control equipment?
- Are compatibility claims backed by hardware tests or only protocol examples?
Choose enough monitoring to answer your questions clearly. A small local setup may be sufficient for weekend trips; an unattended installation can justify a dedicated remote path.
